Get Serious!  40:20 Campaign for Leeds - Victory!

The Leeds - Get Serious on CO2 campaign to persuade Leeds CIty Council to make a commitment to cut the city's CO2 emissions by 40% by 2020, organised by Schumacher North, Friends of the Earth, Leeds Stop Climate Chaos and Leeds TIDAL, has been a resounding success.  On January 20th, Leeds City Council voted 68 votes to 12 to pass a motion making this commitment.  We congratulate the organisers of the campaign, as well as the local councillors and council officers who also worked hard to secure this result.

The next stage of the campaign will be to work closely with the Council and the Leeds Initiative to develop a wide-ranging plan to deliver the needed cuts in emissions, while at the same time delivering ajor benefits to local communities in the form of energy efficiency, environmental improvements and green jobs.  The next stage of consultation on the Vision for Leeds, the strategic plan for the city managed by Leeds Initiative, is up for consultation now and we encourage everyone to participate in this consultation by pressing for reforms in the areas of local food, sustainable transport, home insulation, renewable energy generation and other measures.
